Pond House
Embracing the timeless Japanese principle of Shibui, the Pond House embodies simplicity, subtlety, and unobtrusiveness, harmonizing seamlessly with its surroundings.
Inspired by two decades spent living in Chicago and working in the hospitality industry, the clients were enamored by the relaxed lifestyle and picturesque landscapes of Michigan's west coast. Their acquisition of a retired apple orchard led them to collaborate with Synecdoche in crafting a residence adjacent to North Coast Inn.

Incorporating influences from Japanese and Scandinavian cultures, the Pond House takes on the form of interconnected smaller structures nestled within the landscape, eschewing a singular imposing mass. Expansive openings at the end of each axis act as navigational markers, anchoring inhabitants within the natural surroundings.
Central to the design is a spacious corridor adorned with curated art pieces—a passage linking public and private realms, offering glimpses into the various zones.
A tranquil reading nook anchors the East wing and becomes a sanctuary for the clients' extensive book collection. The bedroom suite, positioned to the north, provides vistas of the treeline and boasts an expansive steam shower, large enough for relaxation, alongside a luxurious soaking tub.
Nestled between the sleeping area and the kitchen, a verdant garden thrives.
To the west, a capacious living space features pockets of built-in shelving, accommodating overflow from the library. An overhead skylight illuminates the kitchen's depth, while the adjacent dining table caters to convenience. The eat-in chef's kitchen, complete with a coffee bar, boasts abundant storage. A full-size fridge, freezer, and an expansive pantry cater to the needs of this rural haven.
Employing a palette of minimal natural materials, the interior spaces achieve an understated elegance.
Glossy black brick insets punctuate the light birch ply, while hickory floors infuse the home with a sense of inviting warmth. The interplay of black, white, wood, and stone creates a timeless aesthetic.
