BAY GROVE

The Synecdoche design and maker team collaborated with Rapt Studio to fabricate custom furniture for the San Francisco offices of Bay Grove, including a cabinet, TV stand, leather screens, and felt barn door. Focusing on natural palette, the objects are made form only four materials: oak, steel, leather, and felt. Synecdoche fabricated the pieces in Ann Arbor and shipped them as components to San Francisco for assembly and installation.

Leather screens with 3/4" wide leather strips were fabricated for partial visibility and privacy in the workplace. Synecdoche hand cut, stretched and riveted each leather strip onto 2" square steel tube frames in a double-sided offset wrap to produce the desired effect.

The cabinet is designed with a bent steel tube frame. The wrap around steel panels, solid oak shelves and doors, and leather handles create sophistication in the simple combination of steel and natural materials. A complementary TV stand showcases the same steel tube frame and oak paneling.

Rethinking the classic barn door, Synecdoche replaced hard wood with soft felt. The felt was laminated onto plywood boards and inset into steel frames then hung on a steel track to create a movable sliding door.
